Each year, there are more headlines about how healthy wine is and the benefits our drinking one to two glasses a day can be for us. These are our five favorite benefits of wine:
Studies find that people who drink wine daily have lower body mass than those who indulge occasionally; moderate wine drinkers have narrower waists and less abdominal fat than people who drink liquor. Alcohol may encourage your body to burn extra calories for as long as 90 minutes after you down a glass. Beer seems to have a similar effect.
A Finnish study of 2,468 men found wine drinkers have a 34 percent lower mortality rate than beer or spirits drinkers. (Published in the Journals of Gerontology, 2007.)
You know wine helps you relax…but depression? Researchers in Spain found that men and women who drank two to seven glasses of wine per week were less likely to be diagnosed with depression. Even when taking into account lifestyle factors which could influence their findings, the reduced risk held strong.
If We’re Happer, We’d Better Have White Teeth
Did you know that drinking wine is a little-known way to protect your teeth from bacteria? Wine’s antimicrobial helps reduce bacteria on our teeth. Using five of the common oral plaque-causing bacteria, scientists noted almost complete degradation of the bacteria after applying the biofilms with red wine.
Brain function declines at a markedly faster rate in nondrinkers than in moderate drinkers. When researchers gave memory quizzes to women in their 70s, those who drank one drink or more every day scored much better than those who drank less or not at all. Wine helps prevent clots and reduce blood vessel inflammation, both of which have been linked to cognitive decline.
